News in Brief

FCER Researcher of the Year

The Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research's 2009 Researcher of the Year is Gert Bronfort, DC, PhD, vice president of research at Northwestern Health Sciences University.

Dr. Bronfort was honored during the International Conference on Chiropractic Research, held in conjunction with the WFC Congress in Montreal.

Dr. Bronfort led a research team that conducted the first clinical trial of chiropractic care for acute neck pain, funded by the NIH, and has received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration to investigate the effects of exercise and spinal manipulation on neck and back pain in elderly and non-elderly subjects. He is also principal investigator of the first randomized clinical trial on the value of chiropractic care for chronic back-related leg pain (also funded by HRSA).

British Chiro Association Wins Initial Phase of Libel Case

The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) is reporting a victory in the first phase of its libel suit against Dr. Simon Singh. Last year, Dr. Singh published an article in the Guardian newspaper that stated, in part:

"The British Chiropractic Association claims that their members can help treat children with colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying, even though there is not a jot of evidence. This organisation is the respectable face of the chiropractic profession and yet it happily promotes bogus treatments."

When Singh refused to retract his comments, the BCA began libel proceedings in July 2008. At a May 7, 2009 hearing in the Royal Courts of Justice, Justice David Eady ruled that Dr. Singh's comments constituted serious defamatory allegations of fact against the BCA and ordered Singh to pay the BCA's costs of the hearing within 28 days. The trial is scheduled to conclude later this year.
